Interpretation With Commentary And Word Meanings: To accomplish many types of actions in life, Agnim Vriṇeemahe – we choose Fire as one among other principal resources. Why? Because…
1. Doota – Messenger. This fire acts like a messenger. It is a medium of transformation and transmission. It transforms gross substances into subtle forms. These transformed elements rise upward and spread into the atmosphere, carrying human intention and effort into the wider natural world. Like a messenger, Fire connects human beings with cosmic processes.
2. Hotaa – Fire gives and reclaims. Example:
• Fire gives us warmth when it is cold.
• Fire gives us light so we can see.
• Fire cooks our food and makes it healthy to eat.
So, fire is a giver.
But fire also takes back:
• It uses up the wood or fuel we put in it.
• When the fuel is finished, the fire goes away, and what is left becomes ash, which returns to the earth.
3. Vishwa Vedas – Fire gives us access to many comforts in life.
Example: Because of fire:
Tools and machines work
• people build inventions and make progress in life.
• Fire gives energy, which helps run machines, cars, etc.
So, fire is called rich, not because it has wealth, but because it provides many benefits that help life flourish. In addition, Fire is a great facilitator for artisans involved in arts and crafts, sculpture and carving, architecture and building, and work related to metal, wood, and stone. Fire is the basis of energy generation (engines, electricity, industry). It enables transport through machines and technological equipment.
4. Su-kratu – Fire acts intelligently. Fire is not intelligent the way a human being is. Being intelligent requires mind and consciousness. Fire has energy and power, but no mind and no awareness. Therefore, fire does not think, decide, or understand. The Veda says that Fire is Sukratu, i.e., it acts intelligently in the sense that It acts regularly and reliably, It follows natural laws perfectly, It produces predictable results (heat, light, transformation).
5. Asya Yajñasya – This World is a Yajña. In a Yajña, something is offered, something is transformed, and something beneficial returns.
This World is considered a Yajña because the Sun offers/gives light and heat → plants grow Plants offer/give food → animals and humans live. Humans offer/give effort and care → society grows. Fire transforms offerings → energy spreads
